Knowing how to drive a two-wheeler is not enough. The Motor Vehicles Act of 1988 makes it mandatory for every individual to own a driving license. However, the first step to procuring a driving license in India is to get a learning license (LL).
Types of learner’s license in India
The following types of learner’s license are available based on vehicle class, as discussed below.
For personal-use vehicles
- MC 50 cc (Motorcycle 50cc) for motor vehicles with an engine capacity of 50 cc or less
- LMV – NT for light-weight motorcycles used for non-transport purposes
- MC EX50CC license for motorcycles with an engine capacity of 50 cc or more and those with gear
- MCWG or M/CYCL.WG for all kinds of motor vehicles, including those with gear
For commercial-use vehicles
- HGMV for Heavy Goods Motor Vehicles
- LMV – TR for light-weight motorcycles used for commercial purposes
- HPMV license for heavy passenger vehicles
- LMV – NT for light-weight commercial vehicles used for non-transport purposes
- MGV for medium goods vehicles
Eligibility criteria
- General requirements – applicants must be familiar with traffic rules
- Motorcycles with gear – applicants must be at least 18 years old
- Motorcycles without gear with an engine capacity up to 50 cc – applicant must be at least 16 years old
- Commercial heavy-use and transport vehicles – applicants must be at least 18 years old and have school training till the 8th
Documents needed
An applicant must submit scanned copies of the following documents online along with their application form to obtain a two-wheeler learning license –
Age proof documents (submit any one)
- PAN Card
- Passport
- Birth Certificate
- Mark sheet of class 10th
- Transfer certificate of school, which must contain the date of birth
Address proof documents (submit any one)
- Ration card
- Aadhaar card
- LIC policy bond
- Passport
- Recent electricity or telephone bill
- For residents of another city living on rent, the registered house rent agreement along with recent utility bills, can be submitted.
Other requirements
- At least six passport-sized photographs
- Application fees for the license
- Medical certificate with Form 1 and Form 1A duly signed by a certified government doctor
- Application form completely filled and duly signed – the form is available online or can be taken from the nearest RTO office
Applying for a learner’s license online
The following are the steps involved in the general application process online:
- Look up your state transport website and check whether they allow you to file an application online.
- Fill in the application form, which requires basic details such as your name, father’s name, Aadhaar card number, postal code, etc.
- Submit scanned copies of your age proof and address proof documents
- Most websites allow you to schedule your driving test online. Once that is done, simply make an online payment for applying. You will receive a receipt in your mailbox, which needs to be shown at the time of the test.
